If you are travelling by car, we recommend a four-wheel drive vehicle, especially during the rainy season. Roads are paved most of the way, but most of the roads closer to the beaches are gravel, although most are in fairly good condition(notice the repeated use of the word “most”). A 4WD will also let you enjoy other nearby natural sites without worrying about driving problems.
From the San José area, take the Interamerican Highway North(also known as the PanAmerican Highway 1). I usually catch it out of Alajuela right in front of the Hampton Inn(which is very close to the Airport). You drive for at least 2 hours(it’s a beautiful drive once you leave the San José area and just keep following the signs to Liberia. Turn left before entering downtown Liberia(you will be at a stop light and there will be a Burger King and a Papa John’s on the corner), and then keep following the signs to Santa Cruz. Immediately before you get to Santa Cruz, you turn right onto highway 161. If you hit the rather large gas station on the left called Servicentro Esso you’ve just passed the turnoff to the 161. Follow the 161 until the pavement ends and turns into a dirt road. The signs at this location are a bit confusing and just a bit misleading. Turn left and then take a fairly immediate right going towards Playa Junquillal. Keep following the signs going towards Playa Junquillal until you start seeing signs for Playa Ostional. Keep following the signs going to Playa Ostional and no longer take the ones that to to Playa Junquillal. On your way to Playa Ostional, you will pass through Marbella and about 4 Km further south is your destination, The Sanctuary Resort at Playa Azul on your right. Turn into the main entrance and you will follow an entryway lined with landscaped trees on either side. At the end, take a left and the first corner on the left is the house.
