Found on the western coast of the Big Island is Kailua Kona.
This small seaside town is both cozy and comfortable and may be the perfect place for a quiet vacation, with tons of hidden excitement. The town of Kailua Kona was once a small fishing village that once housed Hawaiian royalty. The Kailua Pier is a great place to watch the waters. This town also hosts the Ironman Triathlon, which has been held here since 1978. A combination of swimming, biking, and running, many people flock to Kailua Kona to just to watch this event. A popular beach to visit while here is Manini'owali Beach. This beach as bright blue waters and white sands that make it a great place to simply see. Body-boarding is a popular activity here throughout the year, and coupled with swimming, makes it a nice place to spend a day. Snorkeling is another activity that can be done in Kailua Kona, particularly night snorkeling with the manta rays that wander near shore.
