Pedernales is located near the southwestern tip of the Dominican Republic. This seaside town and province offers visitors a calming place to relax while on the beach

The town is primarily a small fishing village and neighbors two national parks a small public beach. The Parque Nacional Jaragua is the largest piece of protected land in the country. Although mostly desert, visitors should head towards the Laguna de Oviedo, a six-mile long lagoon with small islets scattered in it. This lagoon is perfect for avid birdwatchers as flamingos, herons and roseate spoonbills often gather in the area. The uninhabited islands of Isla Baeta and Alto Velo are close to the park and have caves filled with art of the Taino people. La Bahia de las Aguilas can be access here as well, and many sea turtles come to this bay to nest. The other park in the area is Parque Nacional Sierra de Bahoruco. This park features exotic flora and fauna, some of which are unique to the region.
