British Virgin Islands

East of Puerto Rico is the British Virgin Islands, a collection of small, lush islands. These islands are the perfect Caribbean getaway, as they offer so much to do with activities and scenery. There are four main islands, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke.

Tortola is home to beautiful beaches surrounded by mountains blanketed in tropical trees. The largest of the four main islands, it is also home to a harbor. There are several protected anchorages that make this island perfect for boaters and many coves that divers will delight in.

Virgin Gorda means “Fat Virgin” and was named by Christopher Columbus because of its shape. Like Tortola, much of its appeal is due to the safe environment it provides for boaters and divers. It also has a number of isolated beaches, perfect for those looking to relax on their own.

Anegada is the only coral island out of this set of islands, setting it apart from the rest. Its name means the “Drowned Land” perhaps due to the fact it is almost level to the sea. This island supports all kinds of wildlife and is surrounded by coral reef, making it perfect for nature lovers and snorkeling enthusiasts.

The last of the islands is Jost Van Dyke, named after a settler who also was a former pirate. During the later months of the year, whales and dolphins can be observed from this island, which has also been home to a number of different cultures.

The British Virgin Islands offer different adventures and no matter what island is visited, there will always be something to do.
