Found on the western coast of Barbados is the area of Holetown. Because this town was the first settlement on Barbados, visitors can expect history to meld with all the excitement of their vacation.
The town was named for the small channel in which it once cleaned and off-loaded ships. Each year, this historic area hosts the Holetown Festival, where culture, music, and food come together for a large celebration of the area’s history. Aside from the festivals, this area of the island is known for having fine, white sand beaches and calming waves that make the sea even more inviting for a quick swim. A popular beach in the area is Paynes Bay, where visitors can access Dottins Reef for diving. Another place to visit is the Folkstone Marine Park, where visitors can snorkel around the inshore reefs and explore the sunken Stavronikita, which now serves as an artificial reef. There is also Holetown Beach, which is easy to access from the town.
